Science that makes a difference
COAST is a non-profit based in Florida and working in waters around the world. They are dedicated to advancing the stewardship of oceans, estuaries, and coastlines using scientific research, education and innovative technologies. Due to the recent population growth in Florida, COAST needed a visual way to teach the public about the challenges facing their local imperiled ecosystems and to learn about the solutions that can help save them. I was tasked with creating print materials and an online, interactive nitrogen pollution chart.

Creative Print
As a designer, my goal was to create a visually engaging and informative trifold brochure that would illustrate the nitrogen trail and its effects on the Florida ecosystem.
I used an infographic-style approach that featured a map of Florida as the central visual element, with various data points and illustrations that would guide the reader along the nitrogen trail.
To create the infographic, I utilized a combination of data visualization and color-coded icons to convey the information in an easy-to-understand format. The different trails were also color-coded to differentiate between each “trail head” i.e. where the nitrogen was coming from and where it was ending up – and what ecosystems were affected by that nitrogen trail.
After the initial design was completed, I conducted revisions and feedback sessions with Coastecology to ensure that the content was accurate, engaging, and informative.
Overall, my design process for creating this trifold brochure was focused on creating an effective visual representation of the nitrogen trail and its impact on the Florida ecosystem. By using an infographic-style approach, I was able to communicate complex information in an engaging and visually appealing way that would help educate and inform readers about this important issue.
Web Design
After the initial design was completed for the trifold brochure, I was tasked with creating the visual elements for an interactive nitrogen trail webpage on Coastecology’s website. This interactive tool would be used by the general public with an emphasis on school-aged children. I wanted the campaign to stay consistent with the marketing materials so the color palette, icons, and overall design aesthetic stayed congruent with the infographic trifold brochure.
With added animated elements using Adobe After Effects, I was able to create a kid-friendly approach to the interactive map. I focused on creating an effective visual representation while also keeping the UX and UI clean and simple. I enjoyed this project as it was a good challenge and I was able to create something that can educate the public in hopes that it can help the world around us.
